Wardens’ Robin Hood Pantomime Brings Festive Magic to Ceredigion Audiences

A star-studded cast and high-energy production mark another successful year for the beloved Aberystwyth theatre group.

The annual Wardens pantomime has once again captured the hearts of Ceredigion residents, bringing the legendary tale of Robin Hood to life at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. This year’s production has been hailed as a vibrant success, continuing the group’s long-standing tradition of high-quality festive entertainment.

Written and directed by pantomime veteran Richard Cheshire, the script is packed with humor, local references, and contemporary cultural nods. Audiences have been treated to a fast-paced performance that skillfully balances classic slapstick with modern theatrical flair.

Taking center stage is Alex Neil as Robin Hood, whose charismatic performance leads his band of Merry Men against the forces of greed. Neil's portrayal is matched by the despicably evil Sheriff of Nottingham, played with villainous relish by Nathan Guy.

The Sheriff is joined by his wicked mother, Morgana, brought to life by the wonderfully sinister Theresa Jones. Their schemes to rule the land are met with plenty of boos and hisses from a captivated and vocal audience.

Ioan Guile returns to the stage in a cassock as the lovable Friar Tuck, while Miriam Llwyd Davies shines in the role of the feisty and determined Marion. The duo adds a perfect mix of comedy and heart to the forest-bound adventure.

The production also features a standout performance from Donna Clement Richards as Fairy Evergreen, who guides the heroes through the deepest, darkest parts of Sherwood Forest. The forest itself is evocatively realized through stunning set designs, complete with a magical talking tree.

Supporting the leading roles are local favorites including Sion Wyn as the eccentric Daf the Daft and Julie McNicholls Vale as the vegetable-throwing Miss Much. The Merry Mob is completed by Leo Price as Will Scarlet and Osian Jewell as Little John.

Music remains a highlight of the show under the direction of Elinor Powell, whose live band provides a toe-tapping soundtrack for the entire family. The choreography, featuring both the main cast and talented young dancers from the local community, adds a professional polish to every musical number.

With performances running through January 24, the show continues to draw large crowds, reflecting the community's strong support for The Wardens. A special British Sign Language (BSL) performance is scheduled for January 17, ensuring the magic of theatre remains accessible to all.

This year’s Robin Hood stands as a testament to the dedication of the backstage crew and the plethora of local talent involved. As the Arts Centre foyer buzzes with excitement each evening, it is clear that the Wardens have delivered another quintessential Ceredigion winter treat.
